Trick or Treat

It’s almost Halloween, so I’m raising this one from the old, dead, Zero to Sixty in One Year blog.

Whose arm is that? I have no idea

This photo was taken at an Intensive Care Nursery reunion picnic at UCSF.  My daughter spent several months in the ICN as an infant. The reunion used to take place around Halloween, so the kids had another chance to dress up and show the nurses and docs how cute and healthy they were. This may have been the last one we attended, since someone was getting too grown up to wear a costume and hang out with a bunch of little kids. During her tenure in the nursery, she was roomies with some very tiny premature babies and others who had major medical issues. It was fun for me to see some of those kids over the years as they grew to be toddlers and then little kids.

On this day, we got someone to take our picture, and it’s one that I love of the two of us.

If I recall correctly, this was taken in 1989, the year of the earthquake that made  part of the Bay Bridge fall down. We had to take a cab to the ferry so we could get back home. At the picnic, Caitlin got one of those arrow-through-the head things, which she wore into the cab. As we rode toward our destination, I casually said to her, “So, how’s your headache?”
“Better,” she said. I could see the cabbie’s face in the rear view mirror.
“Want some aspirin?” I asked her.
She said, “No, no, I’ll be fine.”

Then we both cracked up.

Good times.

Love the arrow in the head story! My younger son didn’t turn over until he was almost 9 months old, for no reason that anyone could figure out. My doctor finally made an appointment at the local Children’s Hospital. He started turning over before the appointment, but I took him anyway to be sure there were no residual effects. The doctor examining him excused herself and came back with a doctor in training. She pointed to my son and said, “I just wanted you to know what a perfectly healthy baby looks like.” It was then I appreciated what a tough job that is.
